New Year's Day football
|
Hope you made it safely into 2022. Just one of today’s games lost to Covid at the time of writing.
ARSENAL vs MANCHESTER CITY (1230) A real test of the depth of Arsenal’s resurgence, and one that City will relish. It’s hard to see Arsenal getting anything but a good hiding from this. Blame Covid. Away win.
LEICESTER CITY vs NORWICH CITY Postponed – Covid
WATFORD vs TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR (1500) Chastened by their mauling at home on Tuesday, Watford should now be more focussed and determined to start putting things right. Which is about as far as the optimism goes, because they’re a disorganised rabble that could find itself in the bottom three by the end of the weekend. Pity, really. Away win.
CRYSTAL PALACE vs WEST HAM UNITED (1730) It’s two years to the day since David Moyes returned to the club and there probably isn’t one honest person reading this who anticipated what these years would bring. This evening will also mark Declan Rice’s 150th game for West Ham. Palace have been a bit of a bogey side of late – at least in terms of late equalisers and other irritations – and their recent form is superior to ours. Nevertheless, the Watford game marked the end of a disappointing run and there was something about the performance that seemed to say, ‘Don’t worry, the last few games were just a blip and normal service has now resumed.’ This has the makings of a good, competitive game, and one that we should win. Away win.
**SUNDAY**
BRENTFORD vs ASTON VILLA (1400) Brentford continue to surprise and at the season’s half way point they have accumulated more than 50% of the points likely to ensure survival. Stevie G‘s arrival at Villa Park has lifted Villa, although they remain just two points and two places above their hosts. An intriguing fixture that could go any way. Draw.
EVERTON vs BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION (1400) Everton have had a rough run of form that’s seen them drop to the mini-league just above the drop zone. Which is where you’re normally expect to find Brighton, who remain disciplined and annoying opponents. The Seagulls have never won at Goodison. Today’s a chance to put that right, but you feel that the Toffees should have enough in their tank to withstand any such onslaught. Draw.
LEEDS UNITED vs BURNLEY (1400) A six-pointer, probably, and a chance to get a feel for our next two opponents. There’s an argument that says Leeds have been unlucky this season. Time to put that right. Home win.
SOUTHAMPTON vs NEWCASTLE UNITED (1400) Postponed – Covid.
CHELSEA vs LIVERPOOL (1630) The German connection, the Dortmund connection. A cracking game in store here that will mean much to both managers. Should be a good watch. Draw.
**MONDAY**
MANCHESTER UNITED vs WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS (1730) Wolves have been pleasingly parsimonious in defence – but also in attack. Man U will be far too strong for them this evening. Won’t they? Home win.

Nice one Coffee and a happy new year to you Hard to disagree with your predictions but no doubt they’ll be an upset somewhere hopefully not at Selhurst Park

Happy New Year I agree a win for the happy Hammers I hope it's a game with no ref / VAR nonsense, I've been losing faith in VAR refs lately. Thanks Coffee

Nathan Ake is a piss poor defender. Doesn't matter about playing left back today, he is positionally awful and his reading of the game is plain bad.

Arsenal’s fans are abusing the referee for not being completely biased in their favour for once.

I don't get this logic of someone pulling a shirt in the area but shouldn't be a penalty because not enough to bring them down.
Isn't pulling someone back by their shirt simply a foul regardless of the result?

Before all else, we've still got to win 2 more games than Arsenal over the 2nd half of the season to get CL - with spurs & Man U up our arse (see what I did there?) that's going to be a massive order.

Hope Man City score another few. Never seen such a bunch of entitled cunts as Arsenal (players, management and fans). Lacazette moaning about diving is beautiful to see.
Fucking hate these pricks.
